Body-Horror Puppet Inspired by Emma Vane’s 1935 Short Story

The Moaning Lily is the story of a botanist who is so consumed by his work that he grafts a rare flower onto his own arm despite knowing that it will cause his death. It is a story of obsession and a gothic-horror. I chose to make this a body-horror puppet, trying to make the flesh and skin on there glove look as real as possible. A wire runs from the middle finger to the tongue so that when the hand moves the tongue does too. This puppet was photographed in a studio photoshoot and an on-location photoshoot. I also made a short film using an extract from the short story. I also used an AI image generator and photoshop to edit one of the studio photographs to look as though the model is showing the puppet to the world press at a flower show, like in the story. I curated the rest of the outfit but did not make it.
